Yet again, a client recently came on board and ran into a problem from a prior year. It turns out that their previous bookkeeper made changes to the 2021 books. So when the CPAs filed for 2022, the beginning balances didn’t match. NO! That cannot happen!
Fortunately, we had been in this situation before and knew exactly what to do. We requested the beginning balances that the CPAs had, went into the QuickBooks Online file, and made the corrections. Voila – the balances are now matched, and the CPAs can prepare the 2016 taxes. This is why it is critical to “lock” or “close” the books once you send them to the CPA. If so, you won’t make these changes to prior years and get out of sync.
Ensure your prior year is “locked” so you do not inadvertently make changes after handing off your books to your CPA. Closing the books is a simple step in QBO or QuickBooks desktop and standard practice at Zumifi. Why? Because great books matter!
